Inspired by the rich culture of the American Indian people, the structure emerges organically from the land, terracing into the side of the hill on which it is located. The building is lightly covered in a form that echoes the surrounding hills. The intimate connection with the site is apparent at the terraced garden and roof deck, allowing users to interact with nature at all levels. Responding to the site allows the project to capture the essence of place. The building is integrated into the topography, blurring the distinction between built form and landscape. The procession through the building frames views to adjacent parks and terracing gardens, visually anchoring the person to nature and the land.

The architecture extends a hand to nature, facilitating a seamless dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces as the building becomes a gateway for nature’s beauty to permeate the interior—blurring the boundary between built and natural environments. The intent of the design is that the building is sympathetic and set into the natural contours of the land, becoming less of an object on the landscape.

Rooted in the mission of Chapa-De Indian Health to advance the health and well-being of American Indians and low-income individuals, this facility is designed to be more than just a medical office—it is a place of community, healing, and connection.

The project scope includes a campus master plan, program validation, and the design and construction of a 65,655 square foot, two-story medical office building. The project site, located in Rocklin, CA, has a substantial grade change that allows the building to terrace into the side of the hill. The phase one medical office building program includes a medical clinic, dental clinic, drive-thru pharmacy, optometry, additional patient services, administration, and related support areas.
